On Sunday, October 31st, a Syriac Catholic Church in Iraq filled with people participating in mass, was destroyed and the people inside massacred by Islamic fundamentalists. This church was numbered as the 66th church that was bombed since the start of the war in Iraq in 2003. 58 people died inside for no reason at all, other than their religious identity. Iraqi Assyrians are the indigenous people of Iraq that have been there for over 6,000 years. Today, they are almost all religiously Christian (Chaldean Catholics, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Maronite Catholic, Assyrian Christians, Nestorian, etc...). They speak 75% pure Aramaic to this day, the language that Jesus spoke and the first written language. They created the first University/Library of the world with studies such as Medicine and Theology. They developed Hammurabi's Code of Law. The first known work of fiction emerged from these people. They are a treasure to the world and need to be protected. They are being oppressed in the Nineveh Plains, where they are caught between Iraqi Nationalism and Kurdish Nationalism.  MOST of Iraq's Assyrians now live in diaspora around the world.  If no measures are taken to protect them in their homeland, their identity will be lost.

This is a call to all peaceful and educated Muslims to stand up to Islamic fundamentalists that are terrorizing all religions (including Islam); a call to all people of the world to recognize the need to protect Iraq's indigenous Assyrians; a call to all individuals to stand up for those that are defenseless.

The church bombing in October sparked devastation around the world. One week after this act of ethnic cleansing, Iraqi Christians in diaspora from all parts of the globe came together, clad in black, for a worldwide protest, known as The Black Marches.  The indigenous Assyrians of Iraq have faced a continuity of persecution all through history and demonstrations are too many to be counted.  The difference this time was the world unity and incredible youth control and presence in the marches (most of the youth born in their diaspora regions), projecting their voices to the world, hoping that maybe this time they won't be invisible.  Maybe this time someone will notice their pain and heartache for their homeland.
